Orchid care

Caring for Phalaenopsis is easy when you know how! Here are a few tips to keep your Orchid happy!
Watering - Always check the plants roots before watering! Phalaenopsis always come in clear pots for a reason - in their natural environment where they grow, light is able to reach the plants roots. Clear pots makes it easy for us to know when to water - green roots means that they have had sufficient water. If they are silver then it is time to water. We always recommend using rainwater.
Feed your Orchids - Orchids require regular feeding all year round with a dedicated Orchid food. This will promote strong, healthy growth and a long lasting abundance of blooms! Once a month all year round is usually recommended but follow the instructions on your chosen plant food.
Location - Orchids require bright light, out of direct sunlight. Always keep your plant in the clear pot to allow light to reach the roots. A kitchen or bathroom is a good location as they enjoy medium to high levels of humidity.
Blooms - Flowers will eventually drop off, this does not mean the plant is dying! If the flower spike turns brown and dies back after it has finished flowering then it can be removed. If the flower spike stays green then do not cut it off. Flowers will grow from this spike again, if you find the first node, below the lowest flower and cut that around an inch above the node another flower spike should grow. If you trim the flower spike lower to the base of the plant you are more likely to get more flowers.
Repotting - Use a good quality Orchid bark. Go one or two sizes bigger than the current pot it is in, this is dependant on how much root growth there is. Repotting is a good chance to check the roots over. Any unhealthy, rotted or crispy roots can be removed without harming the plant.
